Swim instructor certification with Upstate Aquatics costs $450 and runs as a single full day, 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM. That is the certification that qualifies you to teach swimming, as opposed to a lifeguard certification, which qualifies you to supervise it.
| Course | Price | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Swim Instructor Certification | $450 | 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM |
| Lifeguard certification | $420 | 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM |
| Lifeguard recertification | $265 | 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM |
| CPR, AED and First Aid | $125 | 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM |
The economics are straightforward. A Swim Instructor Certification credential lets you teach lessons, which are generally paid at a higher hourly rate than lifeguard shifts and are available year-round at indoor pools rather than concentrated in summer. Many instructors hold both credentials and use lessons to fill the winter.
It is also the credential that lets you work independently. Lifeguarding is almost always employment at a facility. Teaching is something you can do on your own terms.
swim instructor certification is a teaching qualification, not a learn-to-swim course. You are expected to arrive already able to swim competently, because the course teaches you how to break strokes down for other people. Expect to demonstrate the main strokes and to be assessed on your own technique before teaching methodology begins.
You do not need a lifeguard certification first. They are separate credentials that happen to be commonly held together.
No. Swim Instructor Certification and lifeguard certification are independent. Many people hold both, but neither is a prerequisite for the other.
Competent across the main strokes. You are being trained to demonstrate and correct technique, so your own stroke quality is assessed as part of the course.
Our swim instructor certification course runs 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM. It is a long day, and it is deliberately intensive rather than spread across several weeks.
Swimming lessons across ages and levels, from parent-and-child water acclimation through stroke development.
