Lifeguard certification for hotels, HOAs and apartment pools works differently from certifying a camp or a municipal facility. You usually need a small number of guards, you need them fast, and you often need them certified before an inspection or an opening date. We certify staff on site anywhere in New York State, and we also supply guards outright if hiring is the harder problem.

Two ways to solve it

1. Certify your own staff. Best when you already employ people who can pass the prerequisite swim, and you want control over scheduling and cost year on year.

What your candidates must be able to do

• Swim 300 yards continuously
• Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only
• Retrieve a 10-pound object from 7 to 10 feet of water and return it within 1 minute 40 seconds
• Be at least 15 years old for pool certification, or 16 for waterfront

Screen candidates against this list before booking. A property that books three slots and sends three people who cannot swim 300 yards loses the day.

Before you open for the season

• Confirm every guard’s certification expiry, not just that they hold one
• Check your AED is present, charged and in date
• Confirm local requirements with your municipality, which can differ from the certification itself
• Book certification in the shoulder season rather than the week before opening

Do we legally need a lifeguard at our apartment or hotel pool?

That depends on your municipality, pool size and how the pool is classified, and it is set locally rather than by the certification body. Check with your local health department before deciding, and treat any blanket answer online with caution.

How quickly can you certify our staff?

Call with your date. Availability is tightest in spring, when every facility in the state is preparing to open.

Can you train at our property?

Yes, if your pool has water 7 to 10 feet deep for the brick retrieval and you have an indoor space for the CPR portions. See on-site certification.
