Certify your pool staff on site: a lifeguard class practicing a backboard rescue in a facility pool

You can certify your pool staff without closing the pool by scheduling training around your operating hours rather than inside them. Most facilities lose swim time because they assume certification means shutting down for a day. It does not. We run the classroom portions off the water and use a single lane or an off-peak window for the in-water skills.

Five ways to certify your pool staff without losing swim time

  1. Use the pre-opening window. Skills testing before public hours costs you nothing in access.
  2. Run classroom and water on separate days. CPR, AED and First Aid need floor space, not a pool.
  3. Take one lane, not the whole tank. Rescue skills can run in a roped lane while lap swim continues.
  4. Certify in the shoulder season. Pre-season and post-season dates avoid peak demand entirely.
  5. Stagger the roster. Certify half the team on one date and half on another so coverage never drops.

What actually needs the water

  • The prerequisite swim: 300 yards continuous, 2-minute tread, 10-pound brick from 7 to 10 feet within 1 minute 40 seconds
  • Rescue entries, approaches and tows
  • Spinal backboarding
  • In-water skills assessment

Everything else, which is the majority of the course, happens on the deck or in a room.

What does not need the water

  • CPR and AED practice on manikins
  • First Aid instruction and scenarios
  • Surveillance, scanning and zone coverage theory
  • Written testing

Course options for your staff

Course Price Hours Pool needed
Lifeguard certification $420 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM Yes
Lifeguard recertification $265 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM Yes
CPR, AED and First Aid $125 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM No

Screen your staff before the date

The single biggest cause of a wasted training day is a candidate who cannot pass the prerequisite swim. It is the one thing a course cannot fix in a day. Ask every candidate to demonstrate the 300-yard swim and the brick retrieval in advance, and you will not lose a slot.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really certify our pool staff without closing?

In most facilities, yes. Tell us your pool schedule and we will build the day around it. Occasionally a very small pool with no spare lane does need a closed window for the rescue skills.

How many staff do you need for an on-site date?

It depends on the course and your location. Call with your numbers and we will tell you straight away whether on site or a scheduled class is better value.

Can new and returning guards train together?

Recertification is a shorter course than initial certification, so they are usually scheduled as separate blocks on the same visit.

Do you travel outside New York City and Long Island?

Yes, to every county in the state. See lifeguard certification in Upstate New York.
